Protecting Washington's Families!
TAKE ACTION>FORWARD TO YOUR FRIENDS
The Governor signed 2009 Domestic Partnership Expansion Bill, completing the Domestic Partnership System in Washington State. If the law is not repealed, Domestic Partnerships will provide the rights and responsibilities of marriage under Washington State Law (but not federal law). The bill signing was a really joyous occasion with over 300 people in attendence, many of them gay and lesbian parents with children. There were also a large number of LGBT firefighters, police officers, and paramedics--many with children--whose partners will now be entitled to equal benefits under state law.
Governor Chris Gregoire said: "This is a great day for the people of the state of Washington... It is time for all of us here in Washington to stand up and say that we stand for justice. We will not accept intolerance or inequality in Washington State."
We couldn't have done it without our supporters in the Legislature and the Governor. Please take a moment to thank them for their votes and support of the 2009 Domestic Partnership Bill!
Sadly, even before the ink was dry on the bill, opponents of civil rights for Gay Washingtonians had filed referendum 71. This is a good time to let your elected leaders know that you are declining to sign petitions for referendum 71 and are asking your friends and family to decline to sign.
Read more about the signing here.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
